Some people seem concerned that I’m dead.

OK, so point the first: can we have a thousand fics where Scotty is always threatening to quit and Kirk learned his lesson this first time so new crew members panic hilariously every time it happens in the future but there is never any danger of Kirk accepting Scotty’s resignation ever again? And Scotty can use it on anything—from actual ethical showdowns to “I will not work on a ship that does not have three-ply toilet paper”—and Kirk will never do anything but roll his eyes in the future, maybe splutter a little bit in futile rage. And Scotty will use this in the future—all the fucking time—because Captain Tight Pants Perfect Hair deserves every second of it as far as he’s concerned.

Point the second: how much do we all love that Scotty and Kirk have to negotiate when and how one accepts/offers a resignation but Scotty and his life partner are 100% on the same page on this issue? And the dude doesn’t even, like, argue. He’s just like, “oh, whoops, sorry, is it time for my resignation letter now? Because I have it. It’s right here.” (PS: I am shipping these two SO HARD now. SO. HARD.)

Point the third: I want to see 10000% more instances of the clothes Scotty wears on shore leave. I want to see all the Hawaiian shirts, all the neon ties, everything.

Point the fourth: I want to see Scotty treat his communicator like a phone all the time. I want him to cover the mouthpiece—ineffectively—on away missions and while grumbling about Kirk and while eating dinner and while finishing off an argument with life partner dude about how much Scotch is a wise decision. I have always loved how all the inappropriate phone social conventions turn up with the communicators. I bet Scotty would tots save photos to his communicator and be projecting holographic renderings of his kids to diplomats in his old age as they smile politely and hope desperately that he hasn’t managed to add more memory for more photos on his (spoilers: he has) and that the photo stream will end soon (spoilers: it won’t). I bet he has invented horribly annoying games with lots of loud annoying music to play on his communicator when he’s bored on away missions.

While most of his peers slog through seventh grade, Stephen Stafford, 13, earns credits toward his pre-med, computer science and mathematics degrees at Morehouse College. The wide-smiling, fast-talking, classical piano-playing Lithonia resident has been labeled a “prodigy” (a term he doesn’t really like), has spoken at Ebenezer Baptist Church, and has fielded private-sector job offers – which he politely declined. CL’s interview with Stafford was cut short because he had to meet with Jermaine Dupri about filming a pilot TV show.

I started learning when I was 2 years old. My sister was 6 and she decided we were going to play school. But she was actually going to teach me things that she learned in school. She was teaching me how to count, how to add. And I caught on to that, and then my mom started teaching me. And when I started kindergarten, I was doing multiplication. And my mother said the other stuff was too easy. I was bored.

I was young at the time and I wasn’t used to repetition. Generally, when I understand something, we move on. With repetition, I’m like, “Why are we doing this when I already know it?” So then my mom decided on home school. I was able to go through the work extremely fast. And after doing that for a while, when I was 11 years old, my mom started having problems teaching me because it was algebra II. And she was having trouble with that. So I went to Morehouse. I didn’t know what the big deal was about going to Morehouse. I just knew it was the next step in my education – and I’m gonna do what my mother tells me to do. My first class there, college algebra, I got a 105 in that. The next class I took was pre-calculus and I got a 99 in that. And that was pretty much the test for whether I could stay at Morehouse. And considering the grades I got there, we decided I’d stay. And I guess you can say the rest is history.

Yesterday my “your friendly reminder” post about how Orson Scott Card Is A Homophobe Don’t Give Him Money got linked-all-over again and I got the same mixture of responses as last time:

1. Oh my god what. Welp, there go my weekend plans.
2. Hear hear!
3. What about all the people who worked on the film?
4. I’m going to go anyway and give an equivalent amount of money to a gay rights organisation.

While all of these are 100% legit, the last two have some problems. I bit my tongue last time but argh I can’t do it anymore.

But the story “Ender’s Game” does not have OSC’s controversial anti-gay message in it. To my mind, paying to see this movie supports the morals of the movie, not of the creator.

Hey, if that’s how you want to justify it to yourself, that’s fine, but the reality is that paying for the movie a) puts money in the pocket of a man who loudly supports bigotry, and b) tells the producers you don’t care that he’s a bigot.

Boycotting movies with messages that you disagree with is a great way to work towards preventing studios from making movies with that message again. But when the movie is fine and someone involved is the issue, boycotting can still be a useful method of protest.

The producers of the film care absolutely zip about the morals of the film as long as it makes them money. They care even less whether or not you support the morals of the film, as long as you give them money. This is an industry; money is what talks, full stop. You are giving them money, which means they have no reason not to collaborate with Card in the future, because your objection to his politics is less than your desire to pay them to see a movie.

Comic store owners talking about morality is not what got OSC’s Superman story put on hold. Comic store owners announcing loudly that they would not sell or purchase the anthology was what got the message across.

Look, guys, and this is not just addressed to the person above but to everyone: I don’t think you should pay to see this film, but if you want to see it and you can’t wait or pirate, just go see it. Stop trying to defend yourself to me, I don’t care about your guilt or lack thereof and I’m not going to absolve you; I’m not actually empowered by anything or anyone to do so. I would rather someone be honest that they want to see the movie too badly to skip it than make up reasons to ignore Card’s politics. Own your actions.

In the grand scheme of any equality movement, whether or not you see a movie is not that big a deal. It is much more important that you support equality, vote for equality, and protest inequality as and how you can in the political arena.

Srsly. Take the energy you’re about to expend arguing with me and use it against someone who’s actually trying to harm people.
